Dowel rods perform a simple, but necessary function: inserted into the lower tiers of a cake, they bear the weight of the tiers above when two or more tiers are resting directly atop one another (without the use of pillars) or of a heavy cake topper or ornament. Without dowel rods, tiered cakes would collapse, the lower tiers being crushed under the weight of the upper tiers. These hollow reinforced plastic dowels provide strong sanitary support for all tiered cakes, replacing traditional wood dowels. The reinforced interiors of the dowels provide extra-strong support, so fewer rods need to be used. The dowels can be cut to size easily with scissors or shears.
